Heldentenor Tobias Greenhalgh is an accomplished singing actor. He was named to WQXR’s Top 40 Under 40 list and has performed more than 60 roles on four continents.
As an ensemble member at Aalto Musiktheater Essen from 2020 to 2026, his roles included Don Giovanni, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Posa in Don Carlo, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Ping in Turandot, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, Valentin in Faust, Schaunard in La bohème, Silvio in Pagliacci, the Father in Hänsel und Gretel, Freddy in My Fair Lady, Sonora in La fanciulla del West and Ottokar in Der Freischütz, as well as Tom Edison in the world premiere of Dogville, winner of the 2023 Deutscher Theaterpreis Faust for Best Staging.
He has sung the majority of the standard lyric baritone repertoire, including Eugene Onegin, Dr. Malatesta, Belcore and Dr. Falke, and his highlights include two Carnegie Hall debuts and a world premiere at London’s Barbican Centre. He has appeared with Glyndebourne, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Opéra de Montpellier, Boston Lyric Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Palm Beach Opera, MasterVoices and the Prototype Festival, among others, and has given recitals in Hong Kong, São Paulo and Wrocław, Poland. His performances have been featured on medici.tv and Mezzo, and on a Unitel Classica DVD release.
A passionate champion of contemporary music, Tobias has created roles in several successful world premieres, and composers trust him to bring new stories to life on the operatic stage with the same fire he brings to Wagner and Mozart.
Tobias was a member of the Junges Ensemble at Theater an der Wien, where he later returned as a guest to sing Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cecil in Maria Stuarda and Bussy in Zazà.
This season he makes his house debut at Theater Bonn as Sonora in La fanciulla del West, creates the role of Erke in the world premiere of Day of Night at Aalto Musiktheater Essen, and sings the world premiere of Inextinguishable with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
A graduate of The Juilliard School (BM and MM), Tobias has won the Grand Prize of the Riccardo Zandonai Concorso and first prizes in the Liederkranz and Mario Lanza competitions. He was also a finalist at Operalia, The World Opera Competition, and was nominated for the Austrian Musiktheaterpreis as Best Young Singer. He is now making a shift into the Heldentenor repertoire, with a focus on German Romantic repertoire and contemporary music, including world premieres written in that register.
